SORUNSAT-1 (Kagayaki)

SORUNSAT-1 is a small spacecraft born out of the JAXA Industrial Collaboration Departments "Joint Workshop on Small Satellites", as one of the six small spacecraft chosen for launch aboard the H-IIA rocket in the summer of 2008.

It is a 20kg spacecraft designed to test autonomous control system performance, to observe aurora phenomena and to test out an inflatable boom and "canvas" deployment system, in which TiNi is a key player. Another benefit of the satellite is a small camera at the end of the boom which will enable disabled children to see their artwork, placed on the deployed membrane, in space.

A TiNi P10 Pinpuller is used to deploy the solar array panels and antenna, another P10 is used to deploy the boom and a third P10 removes the canvas hold-down mechanism. Finally, developmental TiNi Single-Crystal actuators are used to deploy the canvas.
