Ejector Concept

The figure below shows the basic principle by which all TiNi ERMs operate.

It can be seen that the mechanism is quite simple in that the coupler is supported by an array of detent balls much like an air-hose fitting. Retraction of the internal Pin (See Pinpuller Concept) initiates the release function by allowing the balls to roll inward thereby freeing the coupler to deploy under the external preload. This is also aided by the kick off spring which pushes the coupler away from the interface.

The ERM is, in fact, a close derivative of TiNi’s Pinpuller product line and shares 90% of the same components. The additional “leveraging” offered by the coupler interface, however, increases the load holding capability of the ERM from hundreds of pounds to thousands.
