 Frangibolt® Solar Panel Release
One of the most common applications of the Frangibolt is to deploy spacecraft solar panels. Furthermore, in some cases it is desirable to release multiple panels with a single actuator. The figure below shows, in concept, a proven method for securing and releasing a stack of 2 panels using the Frangibolt.

Figure 1A: Stowed Position. It can be seen that a series of cup-cone "seats" are used to absorb sheer loads as well as to generate the necessary panel clearance during installation.


Figure 1B: Released Position. Shows how the compression spring housed in the left panel is used to withdraw the broken bolt to avoid interference during deployment. Note that this is also significantly aided by the inherent strain energy which serves to drive the broken bolt segments apart.
